Conservation Positions at the Institute of Classical Archaeology University of Texas Summer Excavations at Chersonesos Crimea, Ukraine In 2004 ICA will be greatly extending its conservation activities at the The National Preserve of Tauric Chersonesos, Crimea, Ukraine, during the excavation season of June, July and August as part of the joint project with the Preserve to develop a conservation plan with the aim of securing World Heritage Status for the city and surrounding Hellenistic farmsteads. ICA is currently seeking qualified, experienced conservators to work on the following projects. Site Conservation In 2002 the conservation team instigated a test program to develop conservation materials suitable for the excavated structures at the site, using locally available materials. In 2003 large test areas were treated with a range of materials and based on the result of the testing, it is the aim of the conservation team in 2004 to begin systematic conservation of the exposed structures. Site conservation will be carried out by a team comprising of experienced overseas volunteers and experienced and novice locals. ICA is looking for two qualified experienced conservators to lead the site conservation team. The excavation season is split into two half and one conservator is required for each half. The duration of the project will be First half of season: June 27 - August 2, 2004 Second half of season: July 25 - August 30, 2004 If a suitable candidate is available for the entire season, combining the two posts may be possible. The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for: * Implementing the program of treatment devised by the conservation team * Coordinating the work of the team to maximise productivity * Monitoring and maintaining quality of work * Recording * Liaising with the head of conservation and archaeological team as to the viability of the treatment application and program of work. Hellenistic Stilai Research Project A large number of Hellenistic polychrome Stilai have been discovered at Chersonesos. Many Stilai were reused as building materials in later phases of the city construction and are therefore fragmented and in varying states of preservation. ICA is currently undertaking research of this unique resource and to enhance the interpretation of information during the 2004 season it is the aim of the project to undertake conservation of the collection. ICA is seeking two qualified experienced conservators to undertake conservation of the Stelai collection. The excavation season is split into two half and one conservator is required for each half. The duration of the project will be First half of season: June 27 - August 2, 2004 Second half of season: July 25 - August 30, 2004 If a suitable candidate is available for the entire season, combining the two posts may be possible. The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for: * Working with the research team to determine their needs. * Implementing the conservation project * Instruction of final year conservation students and local volunteers in the techniques required to clean and reconstruct the stone fragments and reveal pigment traces that may have survived burial. * Recording of all work undertaken. * Reporting to head of conservation as to the progress of the project. Finds Conservation In 2004 ICA will be undertaking a variety of excavations at the Preserve. A qualified, experienced finds conservator is required to treat material recovered from the excavations The duration of the project will be July 25 - August 30, 2004 It is expected that material recovered will fall into the following categories. Metals: Cu-alloys and Iron--Hellenistic to Byzantine Ceramic: Unglazed and glazed--Hellenistic to Byzantine Glass Hellenistic to Byzantine The site was also the scene of fighting in both the Crimean war and WWII, In previous years artefacts from these period have also been recovered. The site is in a coastal location and there is a possibility of the recovery of wet or waterlogged organic material. The successful candidate will be responsible for * Liaising with the archaeological team to determine interventive conservation requirements to aid research. * Stabilisation, archival packaging and deposition of all excavated finds in the Preserve museum stores. * Recording of all conservation treatments undertaken. * Supervision of final year conservation students and local volunteers * Liaising with the Preserve conservators * Reporting to the head of conservation as to the progress and success of the project. This project offers a unique opportunity to work with professional conservators trained in the former Soviet Union. It is hoped that the project will help the dissemination of techniques and approaches between both communities of conservation. Salary: All of the above posts offer a salary of $150 per day for a 5.5 day week. Travel cost, visa costs, accommodation and subsistence will also be covered.
