Summer Excavations at Chersonesos
Crimea, Ukraine

In 2004 ICA will be greatly extending its conservation activities at
the The National Preserve of Tauric Chersonesos, Crimea, Ukraine,
during the excavation season of June, July and August as part of the
joint project with the Preserve to develop a conservation plan with
the aim of securing World Heritage Status for the city and
surrounding Hellenistic farmsteads.

ICA is currently seeking qualified, experienced conservators to work
on the following projects.

Site Conservation

In 2002 the conservation team instigated a test program to
develop conservation materials suitable for the excavated
structures at the site, using locally available materials. In
2003 large test areas were treated with a range of materials and
based on the result of the testing, it is the aim of the
conservation team in 2004 to begin systematic conservation of
    the exposed structures.

Site conservation will be carried out by a team comprising of
experienced overseas volunteers and experienced and novice
locals. ICA is looking for two qualified experienced
conservators to lead the site conservation team.

The excavation season is split into two half and one conservator
    is required for each half.

The duration of the project will be

First half of season: June 27 - August 2, 2004
Second half of season: July 25 - August 30, 2004

If a suitable candidate is available for the entire season,
combining the two posts may be possible.

The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for:

        * Implementing the program of treatment devised by the
            conservation team

        * Coordinating the work of the team to maximise
            productivity

        * Monitoring and maintaining quality of work

        *   Recording

        * Liaising with the head of conservation and
archaeological team as to the viability of the treatment
            application and program of work.

Hellenistic Stilai Research Project

A large number of Hellenistic polychrome Stilai have been
discovered at Chersonesos. Many Stilai were reused as building
materials in later phases of the city construction and are
therefore fragmented and in varying states of preservation. ICA
is currently undertaking research of this unique resource and to
enhance the interpretation of information during the 2004 season
it is the aim of the project to undertake conservation of the
    collection.

ICA is seeking two qualified experienced conservators to
undertake conservation of the Stelai collection. The excavation
season is split into two half and one conservator is required
for each half. The duration of the project will be

First half of season: June 27 - August 2, 2004
Second half of season: July 25 - August 30, 2004

If a suitable candidate is available for the entire season,
combining the two posts may be possible.

The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for:

    * Working with the research team to determine their needs.

    *   Implementing the conservation project

    * Instruction of final year conservation students and local
volunteers in the techniques required to clean and
reconstruct the stone fragments and reveal pigment traces
        that may have survived burial.

    * Recording of all work undertaken.

    * Reporting to head of conservation as to the progress of the
        project.

Finds Conservation

In 2004 ICA will be undertaking a variety of excavations at the
    Preserve.

A qualified, experienced finds conservator is required to treat
    material recovered from the excavations

The duration of the project will be

        July 25 - August 30, 2004

It is expected that material recovered will fall into the
    following categories.

Metals: Cu-alloys and Iron--Hellenistic to Byzantine
Ceramic: Unglazed and glazed--Hellenistic to Byzantine
        Glass Hellenistic to Byzantine

The site was also the scene of fighting in both the Crimean war
and WWII, In previous years artefacts from these period have
also been recovered. The site is in a coastal location and there
is a possibility of the recovery of wet or waterlogged organic
    material.

The successful candidate will be responsible for

        * Liaising with the archaeological team to determine
interventive conservation requirements to aid research.

        * Stabilisation, archival packaging and deposition of all
excavated finds in the Preserve museum stores.

        * Recording of all conservation treatments undertaken.

        * Supervision of final year conservation students and
            local volunteers

        * Liaising with the Preserve conservators

        * Reporting to the head of conservation as to the progress
            and success of the project.

This project offers a unique opportunity to work with
professional conservators trained in the former Soviet
Union. It is hoped that the project will help the
dissemination of techniques and approaches between both
            communities of conservation.

Salary: All of the above posts offer a salary of $150 per day for a
5.5 day week. Travel cost, visa costs, accommodation and subsistence
