SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to
announce our Spring 2004 Preservation Workshops (Please excuse
cross-posting):

Grant Writing for Digital and Preservation Projects
Northeast Florida Library Information Network

9am - 4pm

    This full-day workshop focuses on preparing for and writing
    grants for digitization and/or preservation projects. Since most
    digitization and preservation grants are refunded through the
    National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Institute of
    Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and the National Historical
    Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), this session is
    based upon those particular granting entities' requirements.
    Developing proposals for state, local and foundation funding
    sources will also be addressed. The majority of the day is spent
    covering the elements of a grant proposal and practicing writing
    those elements.

    Cost is $115 SOLINET members, ($105 early bird, $140 late
    registration); $155 Non-SOLINET members ($145 early bird, $180
    late registration). Any institution within Florida qualifies for
    the member rate.

Disaster Preparedness

    Libraries and archives are vulnerable to a variety of disasters.
    Collections have been damaged by fire, smoke, flooding, burst or
    leaking pipes, and a host of other disasters. To prevent
    unnecessary loss of materials, librarians and archivists must be
    prepared to handle both minor incidents and large-scale
    emergencies.

    This one-day workshop will provide the training necessary to
    plan, organize and execute a disaster plan and a salvage
    operation. In addition to in-depth discussion on the disaster
    planning process, there will be demonstrations of salvage
    techniques, including air-drying books, packing out wet
    materials, separating and drying manuscripts, rinsing books, and
    drying photographic materials.

    This workshop is designed for staff members responsible for, or
    interested in, organizing and implementing institutional or
    cooperative disaster preparedness and response procedures.

    Cost is $115 SOLINET members ($105 early bird, $140 late
    registration), $155 Non-members ($145 early bird, $180 late
    registration). Any institution in Kentucky qualifies for the
    member rate.

Audiovisual Collection Management

    This session will concentrate on the principles and practices of
    managing equipment-dependent magnetic media, motion picture
    film, and mechanical sound recording collections. Topics
    include: preservation activities for sight and sound recordings,
    appraisal considerations, and guidelines for care, handling, and
    storage. Attendees are invited to bring in equipment and/or
    recording media for discussion and identification during the
    session. Instructor of the session is Alan Lewis, Audiovisual
    Preservation Expert in the Special Media Archives Services
    Division, National Archives and Records Administration.

    Cost for $115 SOLINET members, ($105 early bird, $140 late

Archives Preservation: Holdings Maintenance

    During this workshop participants will: review the nature of
    materials found in archives and the preservation problems they
    pose; review factors that cause the deterioration of materials;
    environment, chemical, and physical deterioration; outline the
    goals of a holdings maintenance program and the procedures used
    in carrying out holdings maintenance activities; learn to
    evaluate materials and supplies used during holdings maintenance
    activities.

    This workshop is designed for archives staff as a basic
    introduction to preservation issues and the holdings maintenance
    activities performed during arrangement and description.

Fundamentals of Book Repair
The Georgia Archives

Monday-Tuesday, May 17-18, 2004
9am - 5pm.

    This two-day workshop is designed for staff members who perform
    book repair in libraries and those who supervise repair units.
    The workshop teaches simple, economical, and preservation
    quality repairs for materials in general, circulating, and
    reference collections. The procedures covered are tightening
    hinges, endsheet replacement, spine replacement, paper mending,
    tip-ins, and hinge-ins.

    The workshop will NOT cover techniques for the repair of
    materials that are special, rare, or archival.

    Cost is $175 SOLINET members, ($165 early bird, $200 late
    registration); $215 Non-SOLINET members ($205 early bird, $240
    late registration). Any institution within Georgia qualifies for
    the member rate.

Developing a Disaster Plan (Web-Based Training)
Tuesday, April 20, 2004
with mandatory follow-up sessions
Tuesdays, May 11, 2004 and June 1, 2004.

    To prevent unnecessary loss of materials, institutions need
    knowledgeable staff and written plans for dealing with emergency
    situations so that fewer disasters occur and damage is
    minimized. Disaster planning requires the support and commitment
    of staff from many departments, including facilities and fiscal
    affairs. Plan preparation is more successful and effective when
    undertaken by a committee with staff representatives from across
    the institution.

    Taught in 3 two-hour sessions over the course of six weeks, this
    class guides participants through the development of a written
    disaster plan. This web-based workshop is designed to support
    the work of an institution's disaster planning committee.
    Homework assignments will require input and support from a
    variety of staff members.

    The modules cover: Establishment of a planning structure,
    information gathering, including risk assessment and resource
    list development, setting recovery priorities, an overview of
    recovery procedures, plan development, and working with disaster
    recovery vendors.

    This workshop is designed for staff members responsible for
    organizing, writing, and implementing an institution-wide
    disaster preparedness plan in academic, public, or special
    libraries; archives; or historical societies. Participants are
    invited to submit their completed plans for review.

    Cost is $135 SOLINET members ($125 early bird, $160 late
    registration), $175 Non-members ($175 early bird, $210 late
    registration).

Care and Cataloging of Map Collections

    Institutions caring for large map collections find that these
    collections pose special problems. Many are oversized or rolled
    and hard to store; others are unique and require special
    cataloging.

    This one-day workshop covers basic care and cataloging issues of
    map collections. The first half is devoted to a discussion of
    the characteristics of the materials; a review of factors that
    cause the deterioration of materials: environment, chemical, and
    physical deterioration; an outline of storage, handling and
    other preservation issues; and an overview of developing use
    policies. The second half gives a basic introduction to the
    format of maps and map cataloging principles, including the
    major differences between book and map cataloging in the areas
    of main entry, chief source of information, physical
    description, and notes. MARC tagging, scale, projection and
    coordinates, and subject classification will be discussed, as
    well as resources for map cataloging and tips on searching for
    copy.

    The workshop is designed for staff of libraries, archives or
    other cultural institutions as a basic introduction to
    preservation issues and basic cataloging procedures for map
    collections.

Basic Collections Care
Memphis Public Library

Public library and school media center circulating collections are
subjected to a lot of wear and tear. Despite staff members' good
intentions, some materials and procedures used to repair damaged
items can shorten the useful life of the book, make it hard to open,
and cause more problems later.

This hands-on, one-day workshop will teach staff how to minimize
damage to collections by learning proper use, handling and storage
of collections.  Also covered are simple, economical repairs on
materials for public libraries.  The session emphasizes techniques
that are most often needed in public libraries, do not require
expensive equipment and supplies, and can be performed successfully
by clerical or student support staff after a short training period.

The workshop will NOT cover techniques for the repair of research
collections or materials that are special, rare, or archival.

Cost is $125 SOLINET members ($115 early bird, $150 late

Attack of the Giant Mold Spore

    Mold is a constant threat to collections, particularly in
    climates with high heat humidity. This full day workshop focuses
    on identifying mold, the types of damage it causes to collection
    materials, and techniques for safe mold removal and cleaning.
    Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director of the Chicora Foundation, is the
    instructor for this session.

Preservation Management

    The workshop will outline the manager's role in organizing and
    planning preservation activities in a library or archives. It
    includes lecture and discussions covering the following topics:
    the nature of library materials, elements of a preservation
    program, effects of storage conditions, organization and
    planning, selection, and strategies for integrating preservation
    into library operations.

    The instructor is Julie Arnott, Preservation Manager, SOLINET.
