Conservation Services at National Library of New Zealand in
Wellington is looking for an experienced book conservator to join
our team, which includes four other conservators working in the
paper, archives, sound and photographic materials speciality areas,
as well as technical support staff. Senior Conservators are
responsible for providing conservation management and treatment
services for the Library collections, as well as leadership in the
development of library conservation in New Zealand through support
for the programs of the National Preservation Office, and
participation in professional organisations and networks.

The Senior Book Conservator has particular responsibility for
conservation management programs for the important bound volume
collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library:

    *   The Special Printed Collections of over 17,000 rare and
        early examples of printed books, accounts of early voyages,
        special editions of English literature, important
        collections relating to John Milton and the 17th century,
        and international examples of fine printing.

    *   The New Zealand and Pacific Published Collections of over
        270,000 books, and comprehensive collections of newspapers
        and serials relating to NZ and the Pacific.

The full range of activities include:

    *   Laboratory treatments, condition reports, materials testing,
        special packaging.

    *   Exhibition support and preparation.

    *   Contributing to the management and development of the
        laboratory and unit.

    *   Training and supervision of technicians, contract workers
        and interns.

    *   Training and advice for other National Library staff.

    *   Working with curators and librarians to plan conservation
        programmes for collections.

    *   Participation in disaster planning and salvage programs and
        projects.

    *   Providing advice on conservation to external organisations
        and individuals.

The person we are looking for in this position should have:

    *   At least 5 years practical experience in book conservation

    *   Specific training or comparable experience in the
        conservation of bound materials.

    *   Experience in the conservation management of book
        collections.

    *   Enjoyment of the team approach to working relationships.

    *   Good written and oral communication skills in English.

Salary: NZ$47,794- $56,228. A relocation allowance is negotiable for
the successful candidate, should that individual be currently living
outside of New Zealand.
