Removing varnish from marble

I am working for monument watch <URL:http://www.oost-vlaanderen.be>.
This organisation is giving conservation advice to the owners of
monuments (mostly churches). Lately I discovered a sculpture in
marble with a shiny yellowed varnish. How can this be removed
safely? Is there a possibility to use a cleaning paste (like supral,
arte mundit)?
