Does anybody have experience with the use of Infrared (IR)
frequencies within a Museum? If so what are the potential
implications/issues for museum objects?

I imagine some issues may be :

    * To limit interference with other IR devices within the
        Museum (CCTV etc)

    *   IR damage to exhibits?

    *   Health & Safety issues

Note: the IR frequencies are at around the 300,000 GHz range. Te
Papa is carrying out a pilot programme early next year to test
whether visitors find value in having access to multi-media based
exhibition information via a handheld device. We are investigating
one method of providing wireless connectivity/activating content to
handheld iPAQ devices within exhibition by flooding with IR.
