Summer Internship
Paper Conservation
American Philosophical Society

The Library of the American Philosophical Society (APS) is pleased
to offer an 8-week summer internship in paper conservation,
beginning in June of 2004.

The American Philosophical Society Library is a major national
center for research in the history of the sciences, medicine, and
technology. With its roots extending back to the founding of the
Society in 1743, it houses over 300,000 volumes and bound
periodicals, eight million manuscripts, 100,000 images, and
thousands of hours of audio tape. Among the many extraordinary books
in the collections of printed materials are first editions of Sir
Isaac Newton's Principia, Charles Darwin's Origin of Species, a
presentation copy of Thomas Jefferson's Notes on the State of
Virginia, the elephant folio of Audubon's Birds of North America
(for which the A.P.S. was an original subscriber), as well as a
majority of Benjamin Franklin imprints and a significant portion of
Franklin's personal library.

The preservation and conservation of books, manuscripts, and works
on paper has been a high priority at the APS, beginning with the
first hire of a conservator in 1938. Since that time, the Society
has maintained an active commitment to providing a superior level of
care for its collections.

The intern will work directly under Anne Downey (Head of
Conservation and paper conservator) and also with Denise Carbone
(Assistant Conservator specializing in books) in providing
collection care. The internship program also sponsors one graduate
student from the Book Arts Program of the University of the Arts in
Philadelphia. Internship projects will include: stacks maintenance
and dusting, selected conservation treatment, assistance in policy
writing. One field trip to a local institution is included in the
internship.

The stipend for the 8-week internship is $3,000.00.
