Cleaning vellum

I had a call from a patron who wanted information on cleaning a 1620
book from an Edinburough, Scotland library that he owns.  He said
Scotland burned coal up until 30 some years ago, thus the reason for
the book needing to be cleaned.  I have not seen the book yet, but I
also do not want to do anything to harm it when he brings it in. Are
there any "safe" materials for cleaning vellum that anyone can
recommend?
