Surviving a Disaster
Walmer Castle, Kent, UK
December 15-17, 2003

    This hands-on course will introduce you to the skills, processes
    and procedures you need to salvage a vast range of materials.

    During the course you will learn how to

        *   Set up a salvage operation from scratch - so you can
            develop a coherent collections salvage plan for your
            collection

        *   Rescue newly fire and water damaged collections in an
            environment created to be as realistic as possible -
            helping you to minimise damage in event of an emergency

        *   Maintain your disaster plan and keep it relevant

    By completion of the course you will understand how to

        *   Use a variety of commercially available emergency
            equipment

        *   Set up a salvage area

        *   Prioritise the treatment of objects

        *   Apply first aid treatment to a wide range of wet and dry
            objects

        *   Making decisions under pressure

    Plus you will leave with

        *   Detailed course notes that can be used towards your
            counter disaster plan

        *   The FEMA Salvage wheel

        *   The confidence of knowing how to respond if disaster
        strikes

    Course Costs: UKP525 inclusive of two nights accommodation and

    This highly-rated course gives you a comprehensive knowledge of
    housekeeping principles and their practical applications using
    the historic rooms and collections at an English Heritage
    Property.

    During the course you will

        *   Identify the main threats to collections and how these
            can be reduced or eliminated

        *   Learn how to examine objects and check them for signs of
            deterioration

        *   Understand what to do if an object is damaged

        *   Handle and clean a whole range of objects so you get the
            skills you need to apply basic but professional
            conservation to objects in your collection

        *   Prepare a draft housekeeping schedule

    Plus you will leave with

        *   An object cleaning starter kit

        *   Extensive course notes that will help you apply what you
            have learned

    Course Costs UKP525 inclusive of two nights accommodation and
