The Royal Library, Copenhagen <URL:http://www.kb.dk> is looking for
a Head to the Department of Preservation. We wish the candidate to
start on February 1st, 2004 or soon after in this permanent post.

We are looking for an academic conservator from The Royal Danish
Academy of Fine Arts, School of Conservation or similar education,
including a foreign education at the same level.

The Department of Preservation supervises the physical collections
of the Royal Library and is responsible for conservation and
preservation of the collections. Furthermore, the department solves
preservation tasks for other institutions and external customers
through commercial services.

The Department of Preservation has two academic conservators and a
workshop, which engages a team of bookbinders and professional
conservation personnel. As a consequence of the fact that the
Ministry of Culture is implementing its preservation plans from
2004, the staff is expected to grow considerably. At the moment the
total staff comprises 9 fulltime equivalent.

The Department of Preservation participates in a number of national
and international cooperation and research projects.

Job area: The Head of Preservation has the general responsibility
for preservation and supervision of the physical collections at the
Royal Library, including planning and prioritisation of tasks. The
Head of Preservation is responsible for the preservation effort of
the Royal Library being performed according to the best
international professional standards and practice for this area. The
Head of Preservation also has the responsibility that use of the
collections takes place in accordance with good preservation
standards.

The Head of Preservation must be up-to-date with the preservation
area and collect and use current knowledge for the professional
development of the department, thereby securing the ongoing
development of competence and knowledge within preservation of
library and archive material.

The Head of Preservation is responsible for preservation of the
Library's physical collections, including the physical carrier of
the electronic content, while the responsibility of preservation of
the logical content of the digital collections lies outside the
Department of Preservation.

The Head of Preservation has a central role in the Library's
implementation of the Ministry of Culture's memorandum for
preservation of the Danish cultural heritage.

Qualifications: We expect the Head of Preservation to have solid
managerial experience, a motivating style and good overview of
knowledge related to the preservation area.

Furthermore, it is important that the applicant is skilful in
cooperation and communication, as the Head of Preservation is
working in close connection with many departments, professions and
external institutions.

Interest and qualification to develop the Library's commercial
services within the preservation area are also important.

The Head of Preservation is expected to take part in national and
international networks and participate in project and development
work and might be responsible for such projects.

The Head of Preservation refers directly to The Board of Directors,
deputy director Karl Krarup.

Remuneration and conditions of employment: The position is
classified in grade 36 with bonus according to qualifications. The
position is appointed on a group contract basis.

Criminal record will be investigated prior to the employment.

If the position is appointed with an employee, who does not speak
Danish, it is a condition that the candidate commits to secure the
skill to speak Danish at an operational level within 1 to 2 years of
the employment.
