Harvard College Library seeks an experienced conservation technician
for its dynamic collections conservation program. The successful
applicant will work as Senior Technician in a state-of-the-art
conservation laboratory in Widener Library.

Duties And Responsibilities:  Performs wide range of intermediate
and/or advanced conservation treatments for general library
collections. Assumes responsibility for specific functions in
overall operation of HCL Collections Conservation Laboratory.
Evaluates damaged/deteriorated materials, performs appropriate
treatments, including repairing and rebinding books; cleaning,
washing, deacidifying, flattening, and mending paper. Assists in
training, scheduling, distributing work to, and evaluating the work
of other staff members, students, and temporary workers. Responsible
for laboratory maintenance, including equipment maintenance, supply
orders, and health/safety program; works with Facilities Management
on issues involving routine maintenance of the labs physical plant.
Assumes responsibility for work flow in absence of Collections
Conservator for Widener Library and Chief Conservator for HCL.
Participates in disaster planning/response, environmental
monitoring, and surveys. Contributes to unit goals by accomplishing
related duties as required including participation in team projects.

Required Education: BA preferred. Formal or on-the-job training in
book conservation and minimum of 2 years of directly relevant
experience in a recognized conservation facility required.
Experience organizing/managing projects or work flow, preferably in
production setting. Ability to handle sharp tools/heavy equipment,
to work independently with minimal supervision, to initiate/adapt to
change, to analyze/solve problems, to be flexible/work
collaboratively, to read/interpret documents such as bibliographic
data. Must have good English communication skills. Experience with
MS Windows-based software required. Must be able to perform
repetitive work accurately with attention to details, have strong
analytical/problem-solving skills; Ability to work productively in a
team environment with minimal supervision. May lift up to 40 lbs.,
use sharp tools and fume hood; may be exposed to dust and mold.

Funding is not available for relocation or travel to interview.
