Fountain and mineral deposits

We have a bronze fountain that is starting to become encrusted with
mineral deposits from the local water supply.  Any suggestions on
how to remove the deposits without damaging the patina and/or
treating the water as a means of minimizing the deposits would be
greatly appreciated.
