FAIC scholarships for conservation professionals from Latin America and the Caribbean

From: Eric Pourchot <epourchot>
Date: Sunday, November 14, 2004
2004 Latin American and Caribbean FAIC Scholarships to attend the
AIC Meeting in Portland, Oregon.

The 32nd Annual Meeting of American Institute for Conservation of
Historic and Artistic Work (AIC) will be held at the Portland Hilton
Hotel, Portland, Oregon, June 9-14, 2004. The General Session topic
will be "Toward a Clean Slate: Current Thoughts on the
Responsibility, Philosophy, Practices, and Controversies of Cleaning
Cultural Property"--To clean?, Not to clean?, How to clean?, How
much to clean?, and Why to clean?

Those are questions that every conservator, regardless of specialty,
faces. In recent years, a number of cleaning techniques have been
developed or adapted by conservators. It is for these reasons that
the General Session of the 2004 AIC Annual Meeting will look at the
cleaning of works of art, artifacts, and monuments from many
perspectives:

    * The philosophy and ethics of cleaning
    *   The history of cleaning
    *   The aesthetics of cleaning
    *   The mechanics of cleaning

Also there will be a Symposium on Electronic Media, June 13-14 that
will focus on current preservation practices for digital media,
electronic art, and electronic objects More information can be found
at <URL:http://aic.stanford.edu/conf/>."

The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation of
Historic and Artistic Works (FAIC) is working on obtaining financial
support to offer scholarships to conservation professionals from
Latin America and the Caribbean to participate in the 2004 AIC
Annual Meeting and the symposium. This announcement is posted before
the funding is obtained due to the length of time needed to
disseminate the information, receive the documentation from
applicants, and process the applications. However, this does not
imply a commitment by FAIC to give scholarships. Conservation
professionals with a minimum of three years of experience and
currently employed in the conservation field may apply. Priority
will be given to new applicants; previous scholarship recipients may
apply again. The selection will be based on the quality of the
essay.

Please read carefully the following information and send an
application in English to the Foundation of the American Institute
for Conservation, 2004 AIC Annual Meeting, at the specified address
at the bottom:

Personal information: full name, address, email, fax, and phone
    numbers.

Curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages, please do not attach photos
    and additional information).

An essay on the topic of the conference (maximum 400 words).
The selected applicants will present this information as a
poster (that meets the criteria established by the AIC) at the
    Poster Session during the meeting.

Information on the institution where the applicant is employed:
name, address, phone numbers, fax, the applicant's position in
the institution, conservation tasks carried out on collections
and how the applicant plans to share and disseminate the
information gained from attending the conference and the

    conference and the symposium.

An estimated cost of the round trip economy airfare from
your home city to Portland, Oregon. A statement about the
type of visa the applicant has to enter the USA. If the
applicant does not have a visa, he/she will have four months
to obtain it, from the date the scholarship is awarded
(January, 31, 2004). FAIC will send an original letter of
award to be presented at the respective American Embassy.
The costs associated with the visa will be the
        responsibility of the applicant.

A statement on how much could the applicant personally
contribute to his/her expenses or from other sources of
funding such as his/her institution or local foundations.
The expenses including transportation, registration, hotel
        and miscellaneous are approximately:
