Subject: Flameproofing velvet curtain
Karin von Lerber <karin.vonlerber [at] prevart__ch> writes >I have been asked to evaluate the possibility of flame proofing an >original cinema curtain by the Swiss artist Max Bill I'm not an expert on applying fire retardants to textiles, but if you're interested in a replacement curtain, you might try contacting companies that make curtains for schools and public theatres. When I worked in Virginia, we installed a new curtain for our conservation lab so one space could double as workspace with the curtain open, and a photo space with the curtain closed. From a short distance, the curtain looked very black and almost velvety. The company that installed it specializes in installing curtains in elementary school multipurpose rooms and public theatres. Given all the current fire codes, they were very up to date with the most appropriate fire retardant fabrics to use in manufacturing the curtains. That company was in Virginia, but you must have avenues in your area as well. This may not be the route you want to take, but I thought it might be useful to you (or others) to know about in any event.
