The Getty Conservation Institute

The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), located at the Getty Center
in Los Angeles, California, and one of the operating programs of the
J. Paul Getty Trust, serves the international conservation field by
working strategically to advance practice in the profession.
Activities include scientific research, education and training,
dissemination of information, and carefully selected field projects,
all directed towards unsolved problems in the conservation field.

Reporting to the Senior Scientist for Building Materials research,
the Scientist will analyze samples from art objects and architecture
in collaboration with conservators.  Working with GCI project teams
and outside partners, he/she will conduct scientific research for
field projects, test physical and chemical properties of building
materials and develop new methods of analysis when necessary. He/she
may assemble research teams and supervise staff, interns, and
consultants assigned to projects.  He/she will operate and maintain
analytical and testing equipment, as well as write research reports,
prepare publications, and present results at meetings and
conferences. Specialization in analysis of porous building materials
and expertise in field applications of research results in
architecture and archaeological sites preferred.

The ideal candidate should be capable of working at a very high
level in all functions of research relating to conservation science.
Graduate degree in chemistry, other natural science or conservation,
or equivalent combination of training and experience required. Ph.D.
preferred. Knowledge of one or more foreign languages preferred.
Experience in conservation science and a minimum of 5-7 years
experience in scientific research are required.  Excellent written,
oral communications, and interpersonal skills required.
