Spine labeling

One of our museums is changing their cataloguing system for library
books. They want to use the best available system for applying
catalogue numbers to book spines. Does anyone have a recommendation
for methods of labeling spines and the best products to use, from a
preservation standpoint? Some of the books are rare, and others may
be reclassified as rare and valuable in the future. The museum has
considered making book covers of polyester film or paper, so they
could attach labels to the spines without adhering them to the
books, but this is time-consuming and expensive. We would appreciate
information on how other libraries are labeling rare and potentially
rare books, as well as collections of less valuable books.
