Conservation Manager
National Maritime Museum

Salary range: up to ULP28,500 for the exceptional candidate

The National Maritime Museum is seeking a dynamic conservation or
preservation professional with substantial organisational and
project management skills and experience. Reporting directly to the
Head of Collections Group, the Conservation Manager is a newly
created key role responsible for the management of the Conservation
and Preservation section in the newly formed Collection Care
Department. The post holder will be responsible for managing the
task prioritisation, output, and development of conservation and
preservation staff in the specialisms of paper, book, photograph,
paintings, frames, textile, and 3D organic and inorganic materials.
This work involves flexible and sensitive liaison with fellow staff
at all levels, with particular emphasis upon coordination with two
other Collection Care Department managers responsible for display,
preventive conservation, storage, and movement matters.

Duties and Responsibilities

    *   Managing the task prioritisation for conservation staff in
        the Conservation and Preservation section of the Collection
        Care Department

    *   Work closely with other managers in Collections Care
        Department, Collections Group, and Collections Division to
        ensure that stakeholder needs (internal and external) are
        fully met

    *   Develop specialist staff to expand and share their knowledge
        and skills, in line with the Museum's research policy;
        responsible for staff professional development

    *   Maintaining records and providing statistical results
        concerning departmental activity and output as required

    *   Day to day management of operational costs and resource
        planning

    *   Forwarding and coordinating initiatives for skills sharing
        and work exchange between other National institutions and in
        support of the United Kingdom Maritime Collections (UKMCS)
        Initiative

    *   Ensuring appropriate documentation of interventive treatment
        or preservation assessment survey activities *    Able to
        undertake conservation treatments or assessments as required

Background and Experience

    *   A professional qualification in conservation or preservation
        is essential.

    *   Four years' minimum practical experience of staff
        management.

    *   A high degree of literacy with a fluent writing style and
        excellent verbal communication skills will be vital for the
        successful candidate.

    *   Experience with use of word processing, spreadsheet and
        database systems.

    *   Excellent organisational and project management skills are
        required.

    *   A well-founded knowledge of interventive conservation and
        preservation management in the museum context is preferred.

Terms and Conditions: Core hours of work will be 41 per week,
9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, with an additional hour to be worked as
agreed upon with management.
