PhD research position on transparency changes in 19th Century paintings Netherland Institute for Cultural Heritage (ICN) Amsterdam The NWO De Mayerne Programme has recently granted a position for a scientist to work on a joint project of ICN and AMOLF on "The influence of painting methods and materials on the present appearance of 19th C paintings". This four-year project has a strong focus on changes in transparency that affect the readability and aesthetic quality of the paintings. The influence of artists' materials as well as painting technique on changes in transparency will be studied in relation to changes in colour, refractive index and light reflection. The project encompasses technical studies of selected paintings, manufacture and optical studies of paint reconstructions and analysis of original 19th Century paints from tubes and palettes. The candidate is based at the Institute for Cultural Heritage (ICN) and will work in close co-operation with the scientists at ICN and the Molecular Painting Research Group at the FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF). Dr. Klaas Jan van den Berg (ICN) is the principle investigator, while Prof. Dr. Jaap Boon. (University of Amsterdam and AMOLF) will be the thesis supervisor. The paintings' studies will be carried out in close co-operation with conservators and art historians in Dutch museums, universities and other institutions. Requirements: The candidate must have a M.Sc. degree in chemistry or physics with demonstrated interest in conservation or a MA in conservation or art history with solid background in science (B.Sc.). A good command of English as the working language is required. The PhD study must be accomplished in four years.
