A girl with a cat on her head, a man shooting table lamps- these are
just some of the peculiar portraits taken by Arthur Eason, a local
Victorian portrait photographer. Hackney Museum has opened a new
exhibition showing Arthur Eason's collection for the first time,
after they were recently discovered in a Hackney basement.

The collection comprises of portraits of local families taken at
milestones in their lives. Other subjects include Salvation Army
members and music hall artistes. All of the photographs are a
valuable record of values and attitudes of the time, as reflected in
the poses, clothes and props chosen by both the sitter and the
photographer, Arthur Eason.

Arthur Eason's studio was based in Dalston Lane, Hackney from the
early 1880s until it closed in 1893. He took over the business from
his father who had initially set-up the business on The Strand. The
family was also very actively involved in the work of the Salvation
Army; and Arthur Eason's photographs include many members of the
Salvation Army including members of the Booth family and members
from China and India.

This exhibition features interactives aimed at 5-8 year olds;
including a mock Victorian portrait studio with costumes and
original props, a giant jigsaw puzzle of one of the photographs and
an opportunity for children to make their own personalised cards and
portraits inspired by the photos.

The museum will also be holding free events in conjunction with the
exhibition for children and adults; full listing follows.
