Description: The Collections Archivist manages the Special
Collections Department's collections management unit, which is
responsible for managing the preservation and access to a wide
variety of archival materials, including manuscripts, organizational
records, rare books, films, university records, and photographs.
Supervises the Collections Assistant, as well as student employees
(one FTE) and interns assigned to special projects.  The Collections
Archivist accessions, arranges, describes, and preserves
collections, makes finding aids web accessible, and catalogs in the
MARC format. Coordinates the department processing functions,
including appraisal, accessioning, arrangement, and description of
primary source materials in a variety of formats and locations,
including off-site storage. Provides reference service to a variety
of Iowa State and outside patrons. Works closely with University
Archives staff to manage and prioritize University records;
Preservation Department staff to identify preservation issues and
priorities; and donors and organizational/ society representatives
whose collections are housed in the Department. Engages in research
resulting in a scholarly record appropriate to the faculty
appointment.  Reports to the Head of the Special Collections
Department.

Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS degree with a minimum of
nine hours of archival studies coursework or appropriate educational
and/or work experience equivalencies.  Evidence of potential to meet
promotion and tenure requirements, including building an excellent
scholarly record.  Experience and/or knowledge of archival
standards, archives/manuscript appraisal, processing, archival
cataloging (MARC), and archival preservation management.
Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills as well as excellent
oral and written communication skills.  Interest and/or experience
in working effectively in teams and in a rapidly changing
environment.

Preferred Qualifications: Progressively responsible archives
experience, preferably within an academic environment.  Knowledge of
archives and special collections in still and moving images,
digital, and audio digital formats; supervisory experience; and/or
WWW site management/HTML.  Experience with processing large and
ongoing archival collections and use of database management
programs.

Salary/Wage: Competitive and commensurate with qualifications and
experience
