Subject: Call for papers--Mounting and Housing Art on Paper
Call for Papers Mounting and Housing Art on Paper for Storage and Display: History, Science and Present-day Practice This two-day international conference at the British Museum, London, in spring 2005, will be hosted by the British Museum Department of Conservation, Documentation and Science in partnership with the Institute of Paper Conservation. It will aim to bring together for the first time a wide range of experience and expertise to focus on the mounting and storage of art on paper. The conference will explore the following topics: * the history of methods of storage and display in the East and West * the science of microenvironments created by mounts and other housing systems; issues such as off-gassing, quality of materials, anoxic housings, storage in 'suppressed environments' * old and modern materials; contemporary research into board manufacture and other mounting materials; search for norms and establishing standards * mounting and housing solutions for storage and/or display, relating to for example: single sheets; series; problem supports such as brittle and degraded paper, parchment, very thin papers, 3-d items; problem media such as powdery pastels, charcoal, brittle paint; large formats; photographic prints on paper; modern art; scrolls; historical systems not conforming with modern conservation standards * bound collections of prints and drawings: addressing access and display * security and retrieval Lectures will be of 15-20 minute duration. There will also be scope for short presentations on practical solutions as well as posters and video presentations.
