Printing and Graphic Arts Project Assistant Department of Printing and Graphic Arts, Houghton Library Harvard University Normal Workweek: M-F 9-5 Temporary Part-time Position Posting $13.50-15-00/hour Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Curator of Printing and Graphic Arts, organizes, re-houses and catalogs the department's collections of paper, principally the Loring collection of decorated papers. May also engage in simple flat-paper conservation work, e.g., surface cleaning; records other conservation needs. Surveys the books in the Loring collection, checking them against HOLLIS, Harvard's online library catalog; identifies candidates for cataloging, suggests decorated paper terminology for upgrading catalog records. Requirements/Qualifications: B.A. degree and some library experience. Familiarity with cataloging standards and controlled vocabularies. Experience using automated systems (word processing, spreadsheets, relational databases) in a library or office environment. Ability to work independently, with accurate attention to detail. Ability to lift heavy boxes (40 pounds). Desirable: knowledge of decorated papers and paper history, experience handling fine papers, experience with archival processing, reading knowledge of European languages. Schedule/Hours: 10-15 hours per week; schedule is flexible within the M-F 9-5 work week. A temporary position. Additional Information/Comments: Houghton Library is the principal rare book and manuscript repository at Harvard University. The Department of Printing and Graphic Arts includes several collections of historic and decorated papers, of which the largest is the collection of marbled, paste and other decorated papers formed by Rosamond B.
