UCLA Collections Conservation Program

The UCLA Collections Conservation Program seeks qualified applicants
for the position of Principal Museum Scientist.  The successful
candidate will perform a broad range of conservation treatment on
the high use library collections including circulating and special
collections materials. Provide technical advice on the housing,
storage, handling, and repair of the special/circulating collections
at UCLA. Prepare appropriate documentation on the condition of
individual items and the treatments performed on each. In
consultation with selectors and special collections librarians, make
technical decisions on treatment of special/circulating collections
Library materials. Research, develop, and implement policy and
standards for the physical care of Library collections.  Research
and prepare technical specifications. Provide direction for the
salvage of library materials in the event of a disaster. Hire,
train, supervise, and evaluate 1 FTE full time technician and 1 FTE
student employee. Propose new services, analyze resources, and
implement projects. Manage the conservation laboratory budget by
preparing fiscal budgets, monitoring and reconciling ledgers, and
preparing budget reports for the Principal Investigator. Maintain
statistics and prepare written planning documents and reports for
the Mellon Grant and the UCLA Library.  Oversee conservation
facilities. Manage the health and safety program for the laboratory.
Represent the Library at regional, national, and international
meetings of conservation professionals. Present lectures and tours
of the facility to the general public and library staff.

Qualifications: Detailed knowledge of conservation techniques for
library materials. Knowledge of the history of books and
papermaking, and the nature and causes of book and paper
deterioration. Demonstrated experience performing complex
conservation treatments involving a broad range of research library
materials. Demonstrated skills in supervising technical staff,
including organizing workflow, delegating responsibility, evaluating
subordinates, and effectively monitoring performance and behavior
and ability to plan and prepare project budgets and to effectively
utilize available resources. Significant demonstrated experience in
library conservation and demonstrated increasing management and
supervisory responsibility. Master's degree in library and archival
conservation or MLIS with a specialization in conservation strongly
preferred.  Certificate in paper or archive conservation preferred.

of satisfactory background investigation.  Salary Range:
$45,100-$81,200
