Title: Applications of Instrumental Micro Analytical Techniques in
Artifact Characterization

By Gene S. Hall
Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ

Abstract: In this talk, Dr. Hall will describe his experiences with
using modern non-destructive analytical techniques such as micro
X-ray fluorescence (XRF), micro Raman spectrometry (MRS), and micro
attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR)
spectroscopy for non-destructive analysis of artifacts. The methods
are complimentary and provide elemental (XRF) and molecular
structure/chemical compound (Raman and ATR-FTIR) information. These
micro analytical techniques were used to determine the composition
of ink and paper in a variety of paper documents that included
postage stamps, stock certificates, banknotes, and stampless
letters. The methods were also applied to paint chips, garment
buttons, and ceramic artifacts. Detailed data interpretation, sample
preparation, and instrumental use will be discussed.

Please join us to hear a great talk and support PPG.
