Princeton Preservation Group Meeting Friend Center, Room 008 Princeton University Wednesday, October 1, 2003 5-7pm 5-5:30 networking/refreshments 5:30-6 business meeting where a full year's programs will be listed with topic and date 6-7 speaker Title: Applications of Instrumental Micro Analytical Techniques in Artifact Characterization By Gene S. Hall Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ Abstract: In this talk, Dr. Hall will describe his experiences with using modern non-destructive analytical techniques such as micro X-ray fluorescence (XRF), micro Raman spectrometry (MRS), and micro attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy for non-destructive analysis of artifacts. The methods are complimentary and provide elemental (XRF) and molecular structure/chemical compound (Raman and ATR-FTIR) information. These micro analytical techniques were used to determine the composition of ink and paper in a variety of paper documents that included postage stamps, stock certificates, banknotes, and stampless letters. The methods were also applied to paint chips, garment buttons, and ceramic artifacts. Detailed data interpretation, sample preparation, and instrumental use will be discussed. Please join us to hear a great talk and support PPG. Directions: The Friends Center is located on campus at the corner of Olden and Williams Streets, one block south of Nassau Street (Route 27). Nassau Street can be reached directly from: US Route 1 via Washington Road; I-95 via Route 206 (North) or Princeton Pike (North). There is parking on the street, which is metered or park free at lots 10 or 10A that are unrestricted after 5 pm (see map at <URL:http://www.princeton.edu/pr/visitors/map.html>). Room 008 is located downstairs on the lower level in the Friends Center.
