Fall 2003 Workshop Schedule North Bennet Street School, 39 North Bennet Street Boston MA 02113 617-227-0155, ext 102 <URL:http://www.nbss.org> New Workshop: Benchwork Open Studio Saturdays, Sept 20, 27, Oct 4, 18, 25, 2003 8:30 am-4:30 pm Instructor to be announced $75.00 per day This new course offering is request of workshop students. Not all workshop students have a space with a bench and vise to complete a project started in a workshop at NBSS. Or, they may want to continue practicing a technique learned in a NBSS workshop, such as cutting dovetails,grinding chisels, carving or inlay, under the supervision of someone with experience. Students signing up for a day(s) of Benchwork Open Studio will have the use of a bench with vise, grinders, clamps, mallets, flattening plates, router planes, and bench risers. A materials fee will be charged for sandpaper and wood, candle box kits will also be available for purchase. Class size is limited to 14 and some experience is necessary as no instruction will happen, only supervision. Students can register for one day or all the days available, pre-registration is required. Fundamentals of Fine Woodworking Saturdays, Sept 20-Dec. 6, 2003 8:30 am-4:30 pm Brian Weldy, Instructor $750.00 This course will cover three essential elements to build a foundation of skills necessary for one to attempt fine woodworking projects. Topics include: 1)sharpening, tuning and use of basic hand tools including paring chisels, hand plane, dovetail saw, card scraper and cutting gauge. 2)characteristics of wood and wood movement in furniture making. 3)the strategies of laying out and cutting dovetails and mortise and tenon joinery using flat and square reference surfaces. Demonstrations and student exercises will develop skills such as chopping and paring with a chisel and hand planing. Students will learn to layout and cut dovetail and mortise and tenon joints. Traditional cabinetmaking practices will be explained throughout the workshop as instructors emphasize how these methods can be used systematically in any woodworking project. This class is open to all and limited to 15 students. *Please note: There is no class on November 1 or 29.* Fundamentals of Machine Woodworking Saturdays, Sept. 20-Oct. 18, 2003 8:30 am-4:30 pm Matthew Wajda, Instructor $400.00 Students in this workshop will develop skills and confidence to perform basic machine operations as a grounding for more complicated furniture making procedures. Basic machine design, maintenance, and safety procedures and operation will be covered as students construct a small storage box. This class is limited to 10 students. This introductory course will enable students to learn and explore some of the oldest known bookbinding techniques. An historical range of sewn bindings will be practiced as an alternative to traditional case bindings. Through demonstrations and exercises, students will earn to construct simple pamphlets, long stitch, coptic and other bindings as time permits. This class is open to all skill levels and is limited to 12 students. New Workshop: Introduction to Spindle Turning Friday-Sunday, October 10-12, 2003 8:30 am-4:30 pm Instructor to be announced $250.00 This course will offer instruction in spindle turning techniques used in furniture making. Information on lathes, tools, materials and finishing will be presented. Sharpening tools will be demonstrated and practiced. Each student will have a lathe to use and practice various turning techniques using four basic tools, the roughing gouge, spindle gouge, parting tool and skew chisel. Students will have the opportunity to turn a mallet before the class ends. This class is open to all skill levels and class size is limited to 12. Shaker Oval Boxmaking Saturday, October 25, 2003 8:30 am-4:30 pm Judith Hanson, Instructor $100.00 In this one day workshops students will construct three nesting Shaker oval boxes working with prepared ovals and box bands. This class is open to all skill levels and limited to 10 students. Introduction to Gilding Friday-Sunday, Nov. 7-9, 2003 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Christine Thomson and Tatiana Wilcke, Co-Instructors $350.00 This introductory course will concentrate on familiarizing the students with the traditional techniques of oil and water gilding. An historic overview of the practices and techniques will be covered. New Workshop: Machine Woodworking-Miter Joints 3 Saturdays, Nov. 8-22, 2003 8:30 am-4:30 pm Matthew Wajda, Instructor $250.00 Students in this workshop will have the opportunity to explore the many strategies of cutting, gluing, clamping and reinforcing the miter joint. While the obvious use of miter joints are mirror and picture frames, mitered frames are commonly used in building furniture. While building the frames, students will practice the different methods and learn the appropriate use of these frames as related to furniture makiNg. Limited to 10 students. *Please Note: Fundamentals of Machine Woodworking is a pre-requisite and Fundamentals of Fine Woodworking is Strongly Recommended.* Chip Carving Friday-Sunday, November 14 - 16, 2003 8:30 am-4:30 pm Jeff Fleisher, Instructor $250.00 Chip Carving is a form of carving that originated in Europe centuries ago. Historically, this type of carving has been used to decorate wooden surfaces around the home and farm, from small utensils to building surfaces. The design possibilities are endless,simple triangle design borders to more complex rosette shapes can be achieved with practice. This class is open to all skill levels and limited to 14 students. Working with Gold Saturday and Sunday, November 15 and 16, 2003 8:30 am-4:30 pm Rosemary Trainor, Instructor $175.00 materials not included Students in this two day intensive workshop will have the opportunity to work with and learn the characteristics of 14k yellow gold and white gold. Students will learn the proper steps in annealling, forming, soldering and finishing a project in gold through hands on practice. Students must have silver soldering experience to participate. Limited to 12 students. Turning Small Objects Saturday, November 22, 2003, 8:30 am-4:30 pm Instructor to be announced $100.00 Students in this class will have to opportunity to turn several small items. These items can be anything from pens, tops, ornaments, drawer pulls/knobs, small candle sticks, etc. The instructor will demonstrate various turning techniques and student will choose what they want to turn. Students may also bring ideas to the class for the instructor to help them turn. To get the most out of this one day class, some turning experience is helpful. This class is limited to 12 students. New Workshop: Benchwork Accessories Saturday, December 6, 2003 8:30 am-4:30 pm Janet Collins, Instructor $125.00 (materials included) This one day course will offer students the opportunity to make bench accessories they are familiar with from participating in workshops at NBSS. Students can choose four items from the list of accessories to make during the class. Kits will be available to purchase for the accessories not made during the class. These items will include, miter shooting board, straight shooting board, 2 styles of bench hooks, 2 styles of push sticks, scratch stock, marquetry cutting platform, etc. Class size limited to 12 students. Hammer Veneering Saturday, December 6, 2003 8:30 am 4:30 pm Matthew Wajda, Instructor $100.00 This one day workshop will introduce students to the basic process of applying veneer to a surface using hide glue. This traditional method of veneering requires very little equipment, making it a practical method for small shops. Limited to 10 students. Bezel Making and Setting for Faceted Stones Saturday and Sunday, December 6 and 7, 2003 8:30 am- :30 pm Rosemary Trainor, Instructor $175.00 materials not included Working with silver and gold, students in this workshop will make round bezels for faceted stones, Students will have the opportunity to cut seats and set the stones in a ring or pendant of their choice. Students must have silver and gold soldering experience to participate. Limited to 12 students. Flat Edge Tool Sharpening Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003 8:30 am-4:30 pm Brian Weldy, Instructor $100.00 This one day seminar will present the theory and practice of hollow grinding and honing flat edge tools. Students will work on chisels and hand plane irons, card scrapers will be covered as time permits. The techniques covered in class will be applicable to other tools as well. Participants can expect to sharpen two or three tools during the session. This class is limited to 10 students. Cabriole Leg, Ball, and Claw Foot Monday-Wednesday, December 15 - 17, 2003, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Dan Faia, Instructor $250.00 Through the use of patterns and systematic shaping of the leg, foot, transition block and apron, students will gain enough confidence to be able to re-create the cabriole leg and the ball and claw foot.
