"Don't Sweat the Big Stuff: Safety and Rigging Training"
Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory
November 17-21, 2003

The Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory, the State's
archaeological curation facility, announces a course in the use of
forklifts and mobile gantries for lifting art and cultural objects
weighing up to 5,000 lbs. The course runs for five days and will be
taught at the MAC Lab in St. Leonard, MD.

Course instructors are Roger Machin and Dean Langworthy of Methods
and Materials Fine Arts Rigging and Installation of Chicago

previously offered this course at the Smithsonian Institution and
the Campbell Center.

Schedule

Day One: Registration and Introductions; What is Rigging; Practical
Introduction and Demonstrations of  Rigging Equipment.

Day Two: Review of Preceding Material; Organizing a Rigging Box;
Hands-on: Gantry; When Do You Need an Engineer; Slide show and
discussion of initial lifting exercise.

Day Three: Organizing a Rigging Crew; Hands-on: Gantry; Crates,
Pallets and Dunnage (protecting the object and the floor);
Lawn/Landscaping protection.

Day Four: Forklift training (all participants will be trained to
comply with OSHA 1910.178); Hands-on: Forklift operation; Common
Rigging Problems; Supporting weak sections of an Artifact.

Day Five: Hands-on: Fork lift operation; Specifying and Ordering a
Crane; Summary and Questions.

Cost: Tuition of $1,000 per person includes all teaching materials,
lunch, local transportation, and some personal protective equipment
(see below).  A deposit of $500 is required with registration form.

The MAC Lab is located in southern Maryland at the Jefferson
Patterson Park and Museum, approximately one hour from Washington

The nearest airports are Reagan National Airport in DC, or
Baltimore-Washington International.  Airport pickups can be arranged
with advance notice.

Accommodations:  Accommodations are available in nearby Solomons
Island and Prince Frederick, MD (Holiday Inn, Super Eight, Comfort
Inn, Bed and Breakfast establishments).  We are trying to arrange a
group price at a hotel in Solomon's Island, which has a greater
range of after-class activities.  Hotel charges are NOT included in
the tuition.

Please bring protective foot gear (ANSI steel-toed shoes).  Hardhats
will be provided.  Warm clothing will be needed, as some exercises
will be performed outside or in unheated buildings.

Course participation is limited to 16 persons.  The MAC Lab reserves
the right to cancel the course if there is insufficient interest. In
event of course cancellation by the MAC Lab, all deposits will be
refunded in full.
