Therefore the National Museum is now seeking applicants for a one year position as an objects/archaeological conservator beginning at the start of September or by agreement. Minimum qualifications are the completion of a certified 3-year program in conservation of archaeological and cultural historical material. The conservation department of the National Museum takes care of conservation assignments within its own collections, as well as servicing cultural history museums and archaeological institutions around the country. The conservation department and the museum collections are placed in Kopavogur, 5 km south of Reykjavik. The permanent exhibition of the National Museum in Reykjavik has been closed due to extensive renovation and new design of the exhibition since autumn 1998. The National Museum will open again in April 2004. The primarily role of the successful applicant will be archaeological conservation, preparation of cultural history objects in connection with the opening of the new exhibition, as well as preventive conservation work.
