Call for papers--AIC Architecture Specialty Group

Call for Papers
Architecture Specialty Group (ASG) of the
American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works
(AIC)

ASG is inviting abstracts for papers to be presented at the 2004 AIC
meeting in Portland, Oregon; June 9-14, 2004. The call is open to
AIC/ASG members and nonmembers, and architecturally relevant
projects from our peers in the Objects, Wooden Artifacts, and
Painting Specialty Groups.

The topic for the AIC general session is "Toward a Clean Slate:
Current Thoughts on the Responsibility, Philosophy, Practices and
Controversies of Cleaning Cultural Property". We would you like to
organize an ASG session focusing on monumental and architectural
cleaning and the role of the conservator. While the general session
focuses on those aspects of cleaning that are cross disciplinary
("To clean? Not to clean? How much to clean? Why to clean?), the
goal of the ASG session is to discuss these aspect in more detail as
well as the unique differences that are imposed on conservators
working with architecture, heritage sites, monuments, wall murals,
decorative painting, and outdoor sculpture.

For paper presentations in the first half of the ASG session,
appropriate questions may be: What are the possibilities and the
limitations when dealing with monumental cleaning issues related to
their larger scale, exposure to the environment, interdisciplinary
teams, and budgetary considerations? Is all cleaning "conservation"?
What are the questions and acceptable answers when cleaning is
related more to an aesthetic consideration, than to the goal of
prolonging the life of the artifact or site?

During the second half of the session, the ASG would like to
continue with the shorter "tips" and demonstrations sessions
implemented successfully last year. Short papers and demonstrations
on cleaning methods, materials, in-progress research, monitoring and
diagnostics are encouraged. The afternoon session will be more
interactive and informal and hopefully include cross-disciplinary
approaches and practices from other specialties adapted to monument
and architectural conservation.

Those interested in submitting an abstract for a paper or "tips"
session can contact Guy Munsch, ASG Program Chair.

Please send an abstract of no more than 300 words by November 3,
2003 to:
