As a component of The Field Museum's renovation of its evolution
exhibition galleries (Life Over Time), a series of large mural
paintings by Charles Knight will be conserved for display.
Commissioned for the museum and painted between 1926 and 1931, the
total collection of 28 paintings depicts the history and variety of
life as it has evolved on earth and comprises the largest holding of
Knight mural paintings in the country. The paintings are of two
sizes: 9' in height, and 11' or 25' in length. They are painted in
unvarnished oil on canvas mounted over a fiberboard that is attached
to a strainer.

The Museum is offering a position for Assistant Conservator to
undertake the examination, documentation, and treatment of 21 of the
Knight mural paintings in the Geology Department's collection under
the supervision of the Chief Conservator in consultation with the
Geology Collections Manager III and the Exhibition Project
Administrator. Duties include: 1. Documents, examines, and performs
conservation treatments and procedures on twenty-one Knight mural
paintings in the Geology Department's collection; 2. Provides
conservation advice to Exhibits, Geology and Conservation staff
regarding environmental, handling and mounting requirements for
storage and display of the murals;  3. Maintains the mural treatment
area, equipment and supplies;  4. Disseminates project results in
publications and oral presentation;  5. Maintains conservation
expertise through reading, discussion, conferences and workshops. 5.
Conducts other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Candidates must have a graduate degree in Paintings Conservation or
equivalent training. Demonstrated written and verbal communication
skills, and demonstrated conservation knowledge and skills are
required.

This is a term position for 12 months, to be conducted consecutively
within the period July 2003 to September 2004. The salary is based
on $31,000-$35,000 per annum depending on experience, and a
competitive benefits package is offered.
