Color targets for digital imaging

We are discussing the use of the usual standard color reference
patches (the ones that one uses in color slide film) as being very
useful and probably necessary all color digital images taken and
printed in the lab.

Is it safe to assume that others using the standard grey scales,
color patches, and measurement scales in digital photos in the same
manner that are used in film photos?
