Subject: Citing treatment reports and unpublished documents
This problem is not of course limited to the conservation discipline, and a generally satisfactory solution has been adopted in the scientific literature at large. Information derived from unpublished sources whether written or verbal is cited in the references in a book or paper as e.g. "(John Smith, personal communication)", or "(John Smith, personal communication, 1997)". This gives due credit to the originator, and provides the reader with the opportunity to request further details from him. Further description of the nature of the source document is generally redundant.
