Subject: Film about the burning of National Library, Bosnia
The following is a post forwarded with permission regarding a new film marking the tenth anniversary of the burning of the National Library in Bosnia. I'm searching for the English version, if anyone finds it, please let me know. I'd like to show it to our librarians. The film is in Dutch, with some English and Bosnian as well. It is available on the Web. I've looked at the first few minutes and it is compelling. Ciao, Alison "Burning Books", a 50-minute documentary film by Knut Jorfald, made to mark the 10th anniversary of the burning of Bosnia's National Library in Aug. 1992 has been shown by IKON on Dutch television (soundtrack in Dutch, English and Bosnian; a full English version the documentary is also available). It is now online (thanks to Frank Tiggelaar of Domovina Net) and can be seen at <URL:http://www.domovina.net/burning_books.ram> The documentary includes dramatic footage of the library on fire. Excerpts from the film were shown on 8 July in court at the UN war crimes tribunal, as part of the trial of Slobodan Milosevic on charges of crimes against humanity and genocide. "Das war ein Vorspiel nur. Dort wo man Buecher verbrennt, verbrennt man auch am Ende Menschen." (That was just a prelude. Where they burn books, they will also burn people in the end)--Heinrich Heine, "Almansor" 1821 Beth Doyle, Collections Conservator Duke University Libraries Perkins Library Box 90189 Durham, NC 27708-0189 919-660-5985 *** Conservation DistList Instance 17:18 Distributed: Tuesday, August 5, 2003 Message Id: cdl-17-18-015 ***Received on Friday, 1 August, 2003
