The leather is almost paper thin. Unfortunately, most paper-thin leather has very little strength. Many book conservators these days are using Japanese papers for rehinging some leather covers. For a Daguerreotype case, Japanese paper might be the best and strongest material to use. For additional strength, you might use a fine cotton muslin covered with the Japanese paper. This material can be textured and also colored to match the original. Bill Minter William Minter Bookbinding and Conservation, Inc.
