Chinese lacquer

Does anyone have any suggestions about chinese lacquer techniques?
I've got an old wooden chinese chest. The surface is fainted and it
needs to be varnished. I already worked with various cleaning
systems and made the inpaint/retouch with gouache-colours. I already
used a broad range of varnishes in a variety of solvents and applied
them by spaying and/or brushing, but the results were not
satisfying.
