SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to
announce The following digital workshops (Please excuse
cross-posting):

Digital Imaging of Library Materials
Mississippi State University
Mississippi State MS
Tuesday-Wednesday, August 19-20, 2003
9am-4pm

    This two-day hands-on workshop is designed for individuals with
    little to no experience with digitization. Participants will
    gain practical experience scanning and editing image files, and
    will receive an introduction to the issues surrounding small to
    mid-sized library imaging projects.

    Topics covered include: equipment requirements for library
    digitization projects, equipment calibration, the difference
    between digital imaging and optical character recognition, the
    "scan once" methodology, file types and compression, basic
    scanner operation, basic image adjustment and manipulation using
    Adobe Photoshop, OCR, terminology used in digitization projects,
    preservation of digital masters, file naming, and storage media.

    The instructor for this workshop is Steve Smith, Preservation
    Librarian, Wellesley College.

    Cost is $300 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($290
    early bird, $325 late registration), $360 Non-members ($350
    early bird, $385 late registration). Any institution in
    Mississippi qualifies for the member rate.

Digital Library Program Development

    This two-day workshop is meant to help provide the knowledge and
    expertise necessary to begin developing local digital resources
    in a responsible, sustainable, and systematic manner, integrated
    with other library procedures and workflow. Topics to be
    addressed within the context of building the program
    infrastructure necessary for creating and providing access to
    digital information include: Program planning and development;
    Standards; Workflow analysis; Lifecycle management; Assessing
    and supporting user needs; Collaboration in production and
    access; Evaluating and managing technology in support of the
    program and library users; Establishing policies and standard
    procedures; Integrating program activities with other related
    library activities.

    Topics include: program planning and development, standards,
    workflow analysis, life-cycle management, assessing and
    supporting user needs, collaboration in production and access,
    evaluating and managing technology in support of the program and
    library users, establishing policies and standard procedures,
    and integrating program activities with other related library
    activities.

    The instructor is Sheila McAlister, Project Manager and Digital
    Metadata Coordinator for the Digital Library of Georgia at the
    University of Georgia.

    Cost is $210 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($200
    early bird, $235 late registration), $250 Non-members ($240
    early bird, $275 late registration). Any institution in South
    Carolina qualifies for the member rate.
