Symposium and Workshop Update.
'Materials For Conservation and Restoration of Paintings: Varnishes
and Retouching Media',
Northumbria University
Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

Further to a previous posting (Conservation DistList Instance: 16:54
Thursday, March 27, 2003), we can now provide more information on
these events.

The Workshop element of the event is now full and there is a waiting
list for places, so further applications unfortunately cannot be
accepted.

However, we are now accepting applications for the one day
'Symposium' part of the event, which will consist of presentations
by Rene de La Rie, Jill Whitten and Rob Proctor.  The Symposium will
take place on Wednesday 10th September 2003 at Nixon Hall,
Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

The provisional programme for the Symposium is:

9:15-10am       Registration
10:10-11:15     Speaker - Rene de La Rie

                *   The functions of picture varnishes
                *   Traditional picture varnishes and their problems
                *   Problems with synthetic polymers

11:15-11:45am   Coffee

11:45-12:45am   Speaker - Rene de La Rie,

            *   Stabilizing traditional varnishes
            *   New synthetic low molecular weight resins for
                varnishing

12:45-2pm       Lunch (not provided)

2-2:45pm        Speaker - Jill Whitten

            *   Working properties of varnishes: solvents,
                application techniques, controlling appearance

2:45-3:45pm     Speaker - Rob Proctor

            *   Working properties of varnishes: case studies
                illustrating practical experiences of new varnishing
                materials.

3:45-4:15pm     Tea

4:15-4:45pm     Speaker - Rene de La Rie,

                *   New retouching paints based on urea-aldehyde
                    resins

4:45-5:15pm     Speaker - Jill Whitten

                *   Practical considerations in the development and
                    use of urea-aldehyde resin retouching paints

5:15-5:30pm     Questions and Discussion

Registration fees for the Symposium are:
