This posting is in response to recent queries about the use of a SC6000 consolidant mixture affectionately known as the "red-rot cocktail" at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) in Philadelphia, PA. The "red rot cocktail" was formulated at CCAHA after difficulties with the application of SC6000 to red rotted leather (the grain layer had a tendency to split from the corium). CCAHA had switched to SC6000 in searching for an improvement on Klucel G. The cocktail was intended as a compromise solution until something better came along. We're still waiting. The cocktail is a 1:1:1 mixture of SC6000, ethanol, and Klucel G (2% solution). It was recently tested in a publication from the Leather Conservation Centre by Betty Haines with good results.
