Assistant/Associate Book Conservator, Etherington Conservation Center The Etherington Conservation Center invites applicants for the position of Assistant or Associate Book Conservator. The individual will join the fifteen-member staff of the Book Conservation Department and assist with conservation treatments, examination, and the preservation initiatives of member institutions. The opening is a full-time position in our regional conservation facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA. Responsibilities: The Book Conservator is responsible for the treatment of a wide variety of printed books, bound manuscripts and albums in bindings of leather, vellum, cloth and paper. The candidate must have excellent manual skills and be capable of compiling time and cost estimates as well as condition and treatment reports. Professional interaction with clients is expected. The Book Conservator may supervise and train interns and technician-level staff members. Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree complemented by a Master's degree from a recognized conservation training program with a minimum of three to five years post-graduate experience in bookbinding and conservation; or a Bachelor's degree with advanced formal training and extensive experience in book conservation is required. Good verbal skills and an ability to work collegially in a regional conservation environment are prerequisites. Knowledge of preservation theory, standards and ethics of conservation practice, historical book structures, and chemistry is required. Skills should include: * precision hand-skills * attention to detail * knowledge of bookbinding materials, tools and equipment * ability to safely handle fragile books and paper objects * ability to work efficiently while maintaining conservation standards * ability to work in a group environment * excellent communication skills * ability to meet deadlines and assist in coordinating workflow * working knowledge of computers, particularly MS Office desired.
