Society of American Archivists 2003 Annual Meeting

"Spotlight on Archives: Showcasing the Diversity of the Archival
Enterprise" is the unifying theme of 2003 Society of American
Archivists (SAA) annual meeting, scheduled to take place August
18-24, 2003 at the Century Plaza Hotel and Tower in Los Angeles, CA.

Paul Duguid, author of The Social Life of Information, will present
the opening plenary address. David Rumsey, a private map collector
and entrepreneur in providing digital versions of maps, will be the
second plenary speaker.

The program features more than 70 workshops, sessions, and other
presentations. A series of "unplugged" sessions--introductory
presentations about archival fundamentals that made their first
appearance at last year's conference in Birmingham--will focus on
moving image archives, security, oral history, records management,
outreach, privacy and confidentiality, and fundraising/ grant
writing.

Some themes of the upcoming program include:

    * Preservation of film, audio, and digital materials

    * Standards for interoperability of electronic information,
such as TEI, CUSTARD, InterPARES, and OAIS

    * Aspects of the workplace, including diversity, mentoring,
        volunteers, and employment ethics

    * Southern California culture as reflected in collections of
surfing, cars, women architects, Afro-American musicians,
        and regional theater.

Of special interest to preservation specialists are the following:

    * Preservation Needs Assessments: National, State and
        Institutional Efforts (Session #31)

    * Diversity on the Screen: Preserving the Moving Images of
        Asian-American, Latino, and African-American Communities
        (Session #14)

    * Building the Foundations for Digital Preservation (Session
        #41)

    * A Model for Digital Audio Preservation and Distribution: The
