Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

As part of its strategic commitment to raise its research profile,
Northumbria University has created 20 new research studentships for
PhD programmes across the University. The Research Studentships are
for 3 years full-time study beginning in Autumn 2003. Each
studentship is worth UKP9,000 per annum plus payment of tuition
fees. Applications are welcome from British, EC and international
candidates who have excellent academic potential and either a
Masters degree or a 2.1 honours or first class bachelors degree.

The subject area of Conservation of Fine Art is specifically
included in the announcement of the studentships and anyone
interested in the possibility of pursuing PhD research in this
subject at Northumbria is invited to contact the Conservation Unit
with a view to preparing applications and research proposals for
submission.

The Conservation Unit has several favoured research topics within
its fields of interest (Works of Art on Paper and Easel Paintings)
that applicants might consider, but it is also open to
self-generated proposals from prospective candidates.

General themes of interest include:

    1. chemical analysis, characterization and properties of
historic and contemporary pigments and papers,

    2. evaluation and development of conservation methods and/or
        materials, including:

        * cleaning methods for painted works of art, specifically
the physical effects of organic solvents, surfactants
and aqueous preparations on artists' paints,

        * removal of adhesives and coatings from works of art on
            paper

        *   paper toning and dyeing

    3. anoxic environments for conservation of works of art on
        paper

    4. imaging techniques for the technical study of works of art.

Prospective applicants wishing to discuss research proposals and
