Description: The Conservation Librarian, a full-time, tenure track faculty appointment, will supervise conservation services at the University of Kentucky Libraries. The Librarian will be based in the Conservation Lab in the William T. Young Library and will report to the Head of Preservation Services, who oversees the Preservation Program and its three areas of conservation services, binding services and reprographics. Responsibilities: The Conservation Librarian oversees the conservation services program for the University of Kentucky Libraries. This includes services for special collections and archival materials as well as the book repair, in-house binding and box-making for circulating collections. Working primarily with material from the Special Collections Division, the Conservation Librarian will perform treatments in accordance with the AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice, on paper and parchment, both bound and unbound, with volumes bound in cloth, paper or leather and will perform or oversee other treatments including encapsulation, deacidification, and protective enclosure construction. The Conservation Librarian will supervise 1 FTE Conservation technician and approximately .5 FTE student assistants to perform book repairs, pamphlet binding and box construction and will work with other Library service centers to set up preservation facilities and services to work cooperatively with the Young Library Conservation Lab. The Conservation Librarian will monitor supply budgets, maintain the supplies inventory and oversee the maintenance of conservation equipment. Working with the Head of Preservation Services, the Conservation Librarian will assist with other preservation activities such as disaster planning, preservation training, grant writing, ARL Preservation Statistics, collection surveys and environmental monitoring. The Conservation Librarian will serve on the Preservation Advisory Council and participate in other library committee and task force activities. The position will provide reference service/document delivery on preservation-related topics to university and non-university customers and will actively represent the University of Kentucky in local, regional and national preservation efforts. Qualifications: * Masters degree in library science from an ALA-accredited program, conservation studies, archival studies or related field. * Conservation training from an established conservation studies program, or a minimum three-year apprenticeship with a conservator, or demonstrated commensurate experience. * Experience in the conservation of books, manuscripts, maps and other library and archival materials, excluding photographic media. Portfolio of work is required at interview. * Experience using and maintaining conservation laboratory equipment. * Outstanding verbal and written communication, training, and leadership skills. * Ability to work with minimal supervision. * Commitment to ongoing professional development, service, and activity. Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications. The minimum professional salary at the University of Kentucky Libraries is $36,000 annually. Benefits: Tenure track, faculty rank, 22 days annual leave, TIAA/CREF, Fidelity, and Twentieth Century Annuity plans. Library: The University of Kentucky Libraries system includes the main William T. Young Library, Medical Center Library, Law Library, Special Collections and Archives, Agricultural Information Center, Lucille Little Fine Arts Library, Architecture Library, Education Library, Engineering Library and five science libraries. Combined holdings total more than 2.9 million volumes. The system has a staff of 65 librarians and 121 support staff and serves a student body of 28,000. The UK Libraries use the Voyager integrated library system. Library membership includes ARL, SOLINET, ASERL, and the Center for Research Libraries, and is a regional depository for federal government publications. Completed in 1998, the Conservation Lab in the William T. Young Library was purpose-built to include a fume hood, Wei T'o freeze dryer, trinocular stereo microscope, ultrasonic encapsulator, vacuum suction table, photodocumentation equipment, three sinks, and other conventional book repair and conservation treatment equipment and facilities.
