Position at Tate

From: Sally Spenceley <sally.spenceley>
Date: Wednesday, April 30, 2003
BP Paper Conservation Intern
Tate Gallery
Salary: #16,400 per annum

Tate would like to announce that BP is supporting a two year
internship at Tate. This contribution will help the Paper
Conservation department with its technical investigation,
conservation and restoration of the Collection. In turn, this will
support Tate's overall aim to increase public awareness,
understanding and appreciation of British Art from the 16th Century
to the present day.

This position allows for a constructive input into the Conservation
studio's daily work. In essence, you will gain a thorough grounding
in exactly what the studio does. You will assist in examining and
treating new acquisitions in addition to existing Tate Collections,
collaborate with various museum staff and learn about the loans,
packaging and storage of art on paper.

Aligned with this is an exciting opportunity to carry out valuable
research initiatives. The studio has an ongoing research project
regarding paper works displays, with the aim of developing a system
of hermetically sealed picture frames. You will also help with
research into technical examination by microscopy, IR and UV
examination and technical photography.

A recognised post graduate qualification in the conservation of art
on paper is a must, as is experience of assessing, treating and
documenting relevant works. You will also need to be computer
literate and have a flexible approach to your work, since some
international travel is required.

This post is based on a two year fixed-term contract.

Closing date: May 16, 2003. Tate is working towards equal
opportunities
