Subject: Linseed oil
A friend of mine (not a conservator!) has applied linseed oil to some weathered oak garden chairs belonging to her brother (this was 6 weeks ago and they were left outside). From silver grey they have now predictably turned dark brown. Brother is very unhappy. The surface was very greasy and I suggested to clean the surface with acetone, This has removed the surface stickiness and done a little bit to lighten the colour, but not enough. The chairs may or may not have been waxed before, any hopes of changing the wood back to weathered grey? D.
