Head Conservator of Painting Museum of Fine Arts, Boston The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is seeking an exceptional practitioner to serve as Head Conservator for its paintings conservation studio, overseeing a staff of 6, including 4 conservators, a collections care specialist, and a framer/preparator, as well as interns and fellows. The Head Conservator is responsible for setting conservation standards for the Studio, as well as administration, development, training, supervision of staff, conducting performance reviews, and assisting with budget preparation. He/she is also expected to conduct or oversee conservation research projects and disseminate information in the field. The successful candidate will work closely with curators to plan and schedule conservation work, as well as advising on the condition and authenticity of potential acquisitions, the advisability of loans, and helping determine the proper environment for individual paintings. He/she will also work closely with the Research Scientist on technical examinations. The Head Conservator will be expected to maintain professional affiliations in appropriate organizations, as well as travel, lecture, attend and help arrange seminars and conferences, keep abreast of the latest conservation developments, publish technical reports and articles in scholarly journals, catalogues, and periodicals, as well as give tours and provide information to other scholars, collectors, and the general public. Candidates should have a graduate education in conservation and at least ten years' practical experience beyond training, as well as a demonstrably significant conservation treatment record and a strong understanding of the history of paintings and painting technique as well as knowledge of technical analysis. Organizational, management, interpersonal, teaching and training, as well as communication skills, are considered essential.
