Conservation Chemistry for Paper-Based Collections

The Yale University Library's Preservation Department is offering a
five-day chemistry course, Conservation Chemistry for Paper-Based
Collections, taught by David Dorning of West Dean College, United
Kingdom.  The daytime course will be offered July 21-25, 2003 on the
Yale Campus, New Haven, Connecticut, United States.

The course is designed as an introduction to chemistry for the
practicing book or paper conservator who has not had specific
training in chemistry and is also open to those who need a
refresher.  It will include both lecture and laboratory exercises.
The following topics will be covered:

    Day 1: The molecular view of materials; Basic chemistry.
    Day 2: Polymers, adhesives and consolidants; Cleaning and
        organic solvents.
    Day 3: Degradation of Materials; Catalysts, enzymes and rates of
        reaction; Energy, light and environment.
    Day 4: Molarity, acids and bases; Deacidification of paper.
    Day 5: Skin materials and tannins; Materials testing.

David Dorning has served as Science Tutor to Conservation and
Restoration courses, coordinator of Conservation Studies, and Head
of Book Conservation and Restoration at West Dean College. He also
serves as assessor for the Society of Archivists Conservators
Training Scheme.

The course is opened to book and paper conservators primarily.

The cost for tuition (includes lab fees and course materials) is
$450.00. The course is limited to 10 participants.  Applications
will be reviewed and those accepted will be notified by June 1,
2003.  A deposit of $250 is due no later than June 16, 2003.  The
balance is due July 1, 2003.  Those accepted will receive an
information packet regarding local information, travel and hotels
shortly after notification.
