Subject: Flaking gilding
One of our students is conserving a Sevres porcelain item which has been restored during the late 19th century. The restoration comprises a mixture of regilding techniques over previously worn areas. Both leaf gilding and 'bronze paint' seem to have been used. The latter appears to be the most problematic as loose flakes also seem to be lifting the original fired gilding from the surface. Has anyone come across this problem before and have you any recommendations for a suitable consolidation technique?
