Subject: Storing Byzantine glass
We are currently preparing to relocate our collections in preparation for renovation of our main building. At the present time I am packing and stabilizing a portion of our Byzantine collection to protect it against possible vibration from nearby site excavation and have come across a sizable study collection of Byzantine glass fragments with a considerable amount of iridescence and surface flaking. Instead of packing this material, we relocated it in its trays to another wing of the building which will not be near the excavation. In the future we will have to pack the glass to relocate it off-site. I am seeking information from others who have had to pack similar collections. I am particularly interested in receiving suggestions for packing materials that will not catch the surfaces or set up electrostatic charges. After the renovation the collection will be returned to the building and placed in permanent storage. I would like, if possible, to have this packing material (or a portion of it) serve as the housings in the permanent storage which I am planning. Any advice will be appreciated, Wendy Claire Jessup Consulting Conservator Dumbarton Oaks 1703 32nd St., NW Washington DC 2007-2961 202-339-6996 Fax: 202-625-0427 *** Conservation DistList Instance 16:56 Distributed: Monday, March 31, 2003 Message Id: cdl-16-56-009 ***Received on Saturday, 29 March, 2003
