Subject: Archaeological wood
The National Heritage Board in Stockholm has recently initiated a project to investigate and assess the extent and condition of archaeological wood in Sweden treated with the alum/glycerole method. The further aim is to gain knowledge of the variations in methods used, both with respect to the initial treatment and to subsequent attempts at stabilization or re-conservation, in order to adopt suitable procedures for the care and treatment of these artifacts. A number of institutions have tackled and are tackling these problems. We are very interested in hearing what sort of experiences others have had with this type of material; its grade and type of deterioration; analyses made; active and/or preventive re-conservation measurements; results. Any other information or comments on the subject are also very welcome.
