Materials for Conservation and Restoration of Paintings: Varnishes and Retouching Media A Series of Lectures and Workshop organised by The Conservation Unit, Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK at Burt Hall, Northumbria University September 10-12, 2003 Workshop instructors/lecturers to include: Dr. Rene de La Rie Head of Scientific Research, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, USA Jill Whitten and Robert Proctor Whitten and Proctor Fine Art Conservation Houston, Texas USA Paul Ackroyd National Gallery, London Alan Phenix Senior Lecturer, Conservation Unit, University of Northumbria Outline: To coincide with the Second Triennial Conservation Conference at Northumbria University, "The Image Re-Integration Meeting" in the week commencing September 13, 2003, the Conservation Unit will hold a 3-day workshop addressing recent developments in materials for paintings conservation, specifically focusing on varnishes and retouching materials. The principal instructors for the workshop will be Dr. Rene de La Rie, whose pioneering research into stable picture varnishes and retouching materials is internationally acclaimed, and freelance conservators Jill Whitten and Robert Proctor, who have many years' experience of use of these new materials. The workshop will comprise a combination of lectures, discussions, demonstrations and practical sessions in which workshop participants will gain first-hand practical experience of new conservation materials. Subjects to be covered will include: Varnishes * Factors influencing the appearance of varnishes * Stabilizers for natural and synthetic resin varnishes * Synthetic low molecular weight resins (hydrogenated hydrocarbon and urea-aldehyde) for picture varnishes * Practical considerations and experiences in the use of new picture varnishes * Varnishing with acrylic and polycyclohexanone resins * Solvents for varnishes Retouching * New retouching paints based on urea-aldehyde resins: development, stability and reversibility * Practical considerations and experiences in the use of new retouching paints based on urea-aldehyde resins * Retouching with acrylic resins and other media. The full Workshop is limited to a maximum of 18 participants, so early booking is recommended. However, the lecture programme of the first day will be open to the public, with a nominal entrance fee.
