EMG Video Preservation Workshop 2003 AIC Annual meeting Arlington, Virginia June 5, 2003 The Electronic Media Group (EMG) of AIC is pleased to offer a half-day workshop, "Identification and Care of Videotapes", focusing on the preservation of this problematic modern medium. The workshop will take place on Thursday, June 5, 2003 from 1:00 to 4:30 PM at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel in Arlington, Virginia, the site of AIC's upcoming 31st annual meeting. Course Information: Aimed at collections managers, conservators, registrars, museum professionals and archivists, the workshop provides participants with an opportunity to handle examples of videotape formats as they learn the basics of proper care of these materials. Participants will be provided with a full lecture outline and multiple handouts. The course will be taught by Sarah Stauderman, co-creator of the Videotape Format Identification Web site (<URL:http://www.video-id.com>) and Preservation Manager of the Smithsonian Institution Archives. Advance registration ends May 14, 2003. Related EMG 2003 Program Activities: The 2003 EMG program includes other presentations related to the preservation of electronic media. On Sunday, June 8, representatives of the Bay Area Video Coalition will present "PLAYBACK", a new interactive DVD on the subject of analog video preservation. The DVD includes visual examples of video problems and a case study involving the preservation and restoration of an early video artwork, The Eternal Frame by Ant Farm and T.R. Uthco. Also on Sunday, June 8, EMG will host Carl Fleischhauer of the Library of Congress, who will be speaking on LC's Audio-Visual Prototyping Project, and Fred Byers of The National Institute of Standards and Technology, who will present current research at NIST investigating the longevity and inter-operability of optical discs, as well as guidelines on the general care and handling of this media. On the morning of June 8, EMG will hold a joint session with the Photographic Materials Group. Topics to be explored include: the preservation of digital photographic prints, spectral imaging for digital image archives, and techniques for the creation of facsimiles of paper negatives.
