Lecture: "'If you can't do it fast, you are doing it wrong!'
Tools and Techniques: Horologists vs. Rest of the world"
Michael Wright, M.A., M.Sc., Cert. Ed., D.I.C.
Curator of Mechanical Engineering at The Science Museum, London
West Dean College, Chichester
Thursday, 12 June 2003
6pm

After a brief spell as a schoolmaster, Michael joined The Science
Museum, London in 1971. For the last 18 years he has been Curator of
Mechanical Engineering, his responsibilities including care of the
collections of hand and machine tools. Michael's practical work
ranges from movements of all sizes, from pocket watches to church
clocks and his horological interests include the work of Robert
Hooke. He has studied, and is developing a new reconstruction of,
the famous Antikythera Mechanism, the oldest geared mechanism in the
World.

This is the second lecture, which has become an annual event to
celebrate our newly established St Roche's Scholarship, exclusive to
students on the conservation and restoration of antique clocks'
programmes at West Dean College. This generous scholarship covers
the residential fees and tuition of a student for a period of two
years and is funded by Mrs J Rowland. It is aimed at candidates
between twenty and thirty years of age who wish to develop a career
in clocks' conservation-restoration. The successful applicant will
be funded for a period of two years so that he or she may complete
both the postgraduate diploma (validated by the University of
Sussex) and the professional development diploma awarded by West
Dean College. Both of these programmes are recognised by the British
Horological Institute and supported by the British Antique Dealers
Association.
