Lecture: "'If you can't do it fast, you are doing it wrong!' Tools and Techniques: Horologists vs. Rest of the world" Michael Wright, M.A., M.Sc., Cert. Ed., D.I.C. Curator of Mechanical Engineering at The Science Museum, London West Dean College, Chichester Thursday, 12 June 2003 6pm After a brief spell as a schoolmaster, Michael joined The Science Museum, London in 1971. For the last 18 years he has been Curator of Mechanical Engineering, his responsibilities including care of the collections of hand and machine tools. Michael's practical work ranges from movements of all sizes, from pocket watches to church clocks and his horological interests include the work of Robert Hooke. He has studied, and is developing a new reconstruction of, the famous Antikythera Mechanism, the oldest geared mechanism in the World. This is the second lecture, which has become an annual event to celebrate our newly established St Roche's Scholarship, exclusive to students on the conservation and restoration of antique clocks' programmes at West Dean College. This generous scholarship covers the residential fees and tuition of a student for a period of two years and is funded by Mrs J Rowland. It is aimed at candidates between twenty and thirty years of age who wish to develop a career in clocks' conservation-restoration. The successful applicant will be funded for a period of two years so that he or she may complete both the postgraduate diploma (validated by the University of Sussex) and the professional development diploma awarded by West Dean College. Both of these programmes are recognised by the British Horological Institute and supported by the British Antique Dealers Association.
